The collections primarily consist of paintings, although in contemporary art, the range includes almost all imaginable art forms and materials.

The works of art are regularly checked for changes or damage and, if necessary, conservation and restoration measures are initiated.

As a collection that grew over the course of history, the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen includes a substantial number of frames from all periods. A frame-maker is responsible for their care, restoration and documentation.
