Following the inauguration of the restorer and art historian Dr. Hubertus Falkner von Sonnenburg (1928-2004) as director of the institute in 1974, the Conservation Workshops of the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen were affiliated to the Doerner Institut in 1977. In 1990, the restorer Bruno Heimberg (born in 1934) assumed the directorship of the institute. Under his leadership, the range of the institute’s activities was broadened to include museum design and security issues, while the depositories, the carpenters’ and the frame maker’s workshop as well as the museum and exhibition technicians were associated. Since beginning of 2003, the Doerner Institut has been headed by Prof. Dr. Andreas Burmester and currently has a staff of 45 to 50.
