The three-year research project Let the Material Talk: The Technology of Late Medieval Cologne Painting from the Master of Saint Veronica to Stefan Lochner commenced in spring 2009 and is sponsored by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The aim is to study the rich collections of medieval Cologne paintings of the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum & Fondation Corboud in Cologne and the Alte Pinakothek in Munich. These artworks from the late-14th to the mid-15th century were painted by important artists who were working in Cologne at that time, including the Master of Saint Veronica, the Master of Saint Lawrence and the only one mentioned by name Stefan Lochner. The joint project carried out in close cooperation by these two museums, the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen and the Doerner Institut on medieval Cologne paintings has been presented on a symposium which took place in Cologne in November 2011. Two larger publications are in preparation.
