The exhibition Leonardo da Vinci: The Madonna with the Carnation, which attracted 34,000 visitors between 15.09. and 04.12.2006, was presented by the Alte Pinakothek as part of the joint project WISSENSSPEICHER - Conservation, Restoration and Research in Munich. The Leonardo exhibition, organised by Dr. Cornelia Syre, Veronika Poll-Frommel, Jan Schmidt and PD Dr. Heike Stege was part of the 28th Council of Europe art exhibition Universal Leonardo and was generously funded by the Ernst von Siemens Art Foundation. A catalogue was published by the Schirmer/Mosel publishing house.

The paintings of Leonardo da Vinci, in particular, are a fascinating topic for art-technological research. This is emphasised by his works which show a joy in experimentation with painting techniques. Accordingly, there had been a long-standing desire to dedicate a single exhibition to The Madonna with the Carnation, an impressive example of his early work and the only painting by Leonardo da Vinci in Germany.
