The Bavarian State Painting Collections own the painting Holy Family with Saint Elisabeth, the Infant Saint John and Two Angels, a major work of the Florentine artist Andrea del Sarto (1486 – 1530). The painting is dated to about 1515 and has belonged to the Alte Pinakothek since 1836.
After extensive restoration work at the end of the 19th Century, the condition of the painting necessitated further restoration in 1987, which, however, could not be completed. Although this very complex work was to have been continued, it had to be repeatedly postponed owing to even more urgent activities. Thanks to a generous donation by the Schoof´sche Stiftung, the restoration and art-technological examination of this important work in our collection could be resumed. In spring 2009, we plan to present the restored painting and publish the research results within a studio exhibition in the Alte Pinakothek.
