The Holy Family was brought to Munich from Düsseldorf in the early 19th Century as part of the collection belonging to Johann Wilhelm, Prince Elector of the Pfalz. It has been verified as belonging to the Prince Elector's Düsseldorf gallery since 1697. Prior to this, the painting was probably in the Florentine Uffizi Gallery, where it was listed in an inventory of 1598.
In 1965, it was first associated with a passage in the Vita of Andrea del Sarto, written by his student Giorgio Vasari in 1568. It mentions a Madonna painting commissioned by the Florentine merchant G. B. Puccini that was to be sold to a customer in
