The project partner is the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) in Berlin, where a diploma thesis on the identification of synthetic organic pigments with the aid of Raman microscopy was carried out.
The improved analytical possibilities are already being utilized for the pure pigments, tube paints and reconstructions from the historical painting material collections of the Doerner Institut. At the moment the investigation of selected paintings of modern and contemporary art from the collection of the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen does not only involve elaborating on specific points of interest, but also it deepens our technical knowledge of the painting technique of modern art despite the fact that so far analyses have only been carried out on works of Max Beckmann, Gerhard Richter or George Baselitz. These analyses not only supply views into the use of one synthetic organic pigment that was possibly introduced on the market shortly beforehand, but at the same time provides important data for the investigations of forgeries - an area, which the Doerner Institut has specialised in since the time of its establishment.
