The Theo Wormland Collection, with its significant holdings in the area of classical surrealism and works of post-war German art, was left on loan to the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen in 1982.

In 1984, following the death of Theo Wormland, the collection of the Staatsgalerie Moderner Kunst obtained, among other things, the monumental stainless steel sculpture “Doppelsäule 23/70” created in 1970 by the steel sculptor Erich Hauser (1930-2004) who was close to the "art informel" movement. Since then, the 7-meter-tall sculpture is prominently integrated into the sculpture park between the three Pinakothek buildings.
