The Forbes Prize, which is given every two years, was unanimously awarded by the IIC Council to Gael de Guichen for his lifelong contributions to the field of conservation. In his Forbes Prize Lecture, which opened the conference, Guichen broached the issue – in his personal way and to the evident pleasure of all assembled – of the concept confusion derived from the terms ‘restoration,’ ‘conservation’ and ‘preventive conservation.’

Due to the generous support by the Fritz Thyssen Foundation, a simultaneous interpretation of the talks into English and German was made available. Thanks to the Getty Foundation, another ten conservators and conservation scientists from developing countries and Eastern Europe were able to participate in the conference. Additionally, the Brommelle Fund made it possible for students of restoration, art technology and conservation science to take part in the Munich conference.

During conference breaks, on excursions and during guided tours around 430 participants enjoyed the near-by Pinakotheken, the Lenbachhaus and other Munich museums.
