In April 2005, the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen opened its thirteenth branch gallery in Neuburg Castle on the Danube. It features paintings of the Flemish Baroque and exhibits 120 works, some in very large format, by artists such as Rubens, van Dyck, Jordaens, Jan Brueghel the Elder and Teniers. The prerequisite for establishing this gallery, in a space that had never been used as a museum, was extensive building work by the Bavarian Palace Department and the State Building Department in Ingolstadt to create conditions suitable for the sensitive paintings exhibited.
