The first plans for the establishment of this gallery existed since the mid-1960s. In the mid-1990s, conservation and restoration measures were initiated on a preliminary selection of paintings. This project was pursued with added vigour in recent years, also with the help of special funds for awarding contract work to freelance conservators.
