The Neue Pinakothek showed the special exhibition Ten Tons Hellas: Carl Rottmann's Cycle of Greek Landscapes from 25.01. to 07.05.2007, as part of the WISSENSPEICHER initiative. The exhibition, organised by Renate Poggendorf, Dr. Herbert W. Rott and Dr. Elisabeth Stürmer, attracted nearly 59,000 visitors.
The exhibition visualised the emergence and history of this key work of nineteenth-century Munich landscape painting. A model of the original Rottmann Gallery, situated in the former Neue Pinakothek and destroyed in World War II, illustrated its eminent significance. Special emphasis was placed on the art-technology of the cycle. The exhibition described the unusual material structure of the paintings in the context of the contemporary discussion on wall paintings. Two unrestored panels normally stored in the depositories of the Neue Pinakothek showed the severe war damages. The exhibition showed the restoration history of the cycle, as well as the design of the new Rottmann Gallery.
