Historical source texts for painting techniques occasionally refer to the fact that in medieval times and at the beginning of the modern age, pharmacies also traded in pigments. By a lucky coincidence, the medical statutes of Frederick II have required pharmacies to publish the prices of all their products in price lists called “taxae”. This requirement also included convenience goods and materials for artists.
